Stop Motion

WEEK 4

This week we followed the stop motion tutorial: http://mojo.csd.anglia.ac.uk/moodle/mod/resource/view.php?id=735

It was pretty straight forward, this is obviously not 2D animation but I think out teacher just wanted us to explore all the things Toon Boom has to offer.
There were several laptops hooked up to video cameras on tripods for us to use.
I enjoyed this lesson, because this is a really traditional way of animating and is very simple.
I used my Mario Kart toys to create a short animation.
I used Toon Boom's ability to remove colour and shadow, which was pretty cool, I removed the brown so you couldn't see the desk the toys were on, it just looked white instead.
I just moved the cars gradualy round a verl small bit at a time taking a picture every time, which creates the frames of the animation. The only problem was, sometimes when you put your hands in the shot to adjust the toys the colour of the desk/background would change and you would have to adjust the settings again because you could see shadows or it would not be white enough.

NOTES:

  • If you want a 2D backround you need to use a blue/green screen.
  • Onion skin is used so you can see previous and the upcoming frames (if they exist) it's a very helpfull feature.
  • You can use auto capture to turn video capture into frames.

To set up the software for image capture:

  1. From the File menu, select Acquire > From Capture Device.
    The Image Capture window appears.
  2. In the Options section, under the Source tab, find and select your recording device
    from the Device drop-down menu.
  3. From the Source drop-down menu, select Full-Resolution Photo.
  4. Edit the settings how you see fit

I followed this tutorial with assistance from my class mate Alec Penred, one we had some ok footage we added sound effects!
